Firefighters owe it to the public they protect, as well as to themselves and their families, to be as proficient as they can be at residential fire suppression. There are no second chances to do it right.

We must be at the top of our game every time we go out the door on a residential fire call. The greatest asset we have is a thinking, knowledgeable, well-trained, sensibly aggressive, physically fit firefighter. They should:

• Participate in frequent hands-on training.
• Learn lessons from those who paid the ultimate price. Make sure fire service members know their sacrifice.
• Do something each day to improve through drills.
• Be the best trained, ready and prepared firefighter you can be.
