1934 im abgelegenen Chillicothe geboren, begann Lewis Wayne Williams als Teenager im örtlichen Plattenladen herumzuhängen, um die neuesten Rhythm’n’Blues-Veröffentlichungen hören zu können. Als er sich für eine Karriere in der Musik entschied, ging er zu Jim Becks Aufnahmestudio in Dallas. Seine erste Platte nahm er 1953 als „The Texas Drifter“ auf, bevor er 1955 bei Lew Chudd’s Label Imperial unterschrieb, für das diese vier Songs aufgenommen wurden.
