Kit, insieme ad un compagno e a una scimmia, mentre sta sorvolando Marte a bordo di un'astronave è costretto ad abbandonarla per evitare la collisione con un meteorite. Sceso sul pianeta rosso deve affrontare i problemi legati alla sopravvivenza su un pianeta sconosciuto. Dopo qualche giorno Kit scopre un altro essere vivente al quale impone il nome di Venerdì. I due decidono di esplorare la grande calotta polare di Marte, ma il loro progetto viene ostacolato dalla presenza di misteriosi dischi volanti.
