Dopo l'ennesimo atto di violenza subito e che ha coinvolto anche il suo bambino, Hélène (Stéphane Audran) è decisa a ottenere il divorzio dal marito tossicomane. Il ricco e potente suocero (Michel Bouquet) si mette di traverso per avere la custodia del nipote. Getta discredito sulla nuora assoldando addirittura un losco individuo (Jean-Pierre Cassel) per rovinarle la reputazione.
Claude Chabrol affronta il thriller famigliare senza mezze misure, gridando tutta la follia di una terribile “faida” in seno a una coppia con bambino. Tremendi i toni drammatici, altrettanto i fatti e le conseguenze derivanti da questa storia di violenza domestica e tentativo di riscatto personale. Il tema della donna vessata torna attuale ed è un soggetto tratto dal romanzo “The Balloon Man” (1968) della scrittrice statunitense Charlotte Armstrong. “All'Ombra del Delitto” segue capolavori come “Stéphane, una Moglie Infedele” (1969) e “Il Tagliagole” (1970). Stéphane Audran è l'inseparabile attrice feticcia del cineasta francese, ancora una volta intensa e impeccabile nella sua toccante interpretazione.
