La guerra in Vietnam ha irrimediabilmente segnato il sergente Murdock, Lopez, Andersson e Brown, reduci provati fisicamente, asociali e senza affetti. Decidono di rapinare una banca per poi fuggire col malloppo e godersi i soldi, sparendo per sempre. Il colpo ha successo, molto meno la ritirata che sfalda il gruppo. Rimasto solo, Murdock è costretto a nascondere il bottino, mezzo milione di dollari, ma recuperarlo si rivelerà pericolosa impresa. La più grande motivazione per Murdock ha i capelli biondi e si chiama Mary Jane.
