Montana Four are a British based band who have effortlessly combined Acoustic Pop, Folk, Country, and Jazz to create their 2009 debut album 'Diamond Wheel' which takes it's name from the John Irving Novel 'A Prayer for Owen Meaney'. There are clear influences on show here, from Paul Simon, James Taylor, and Ray Lamontagne, to Ben Folds, Crowded House, and Don McLean, but the band's identity remains constant throughout. The 'Four' are joined on their various songs by a handful of top class musicians and vocalists who are well known on the London music scene and their presence here only adds to the joyous atmosphere that springs into life as soon as you hit play. The songs are simple, heartfelt and are 'love songs' in the classic sense. No one is re-inventing the wheel here, but a good song is a good song and that's what this band are all about. From the intimate ballad 'All that You Need' wistfully proclaiming an unfailing devotion to the listener, to the acoustic guitar driven, shamelessly uplifting and self explanatory 'Don't You Want To Be Loved'. The band's country and folk influences are called into play most notably on 'Josie', a touching ballad all about the sadness about the inevitable end of a once close friendship. Diamond Wheel is simply a great sounding album, with classic songs, played with passion by talented musicians. It has an immediate appeal due to the strong melodies, but there is more. If you love great songs you will love this album.
