Romantic comedy starring Clark Gable and Doris Day. Jim Gannon (Gable), a tough, self-educated newspaper editor, writes an article disparaging the idea that newspaper journalism can be taught in response to the news that a class is being set up to teach the subject to aspiring journalists. Gannon's publisher senses a story in the making and so sends Gannon to attend the class, under an assumed name, which is being run by feisty Erica Stone (Day), the daughter of a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter. Before long Gannon's writing skills bring him to the top of the class and an underlying attraction develops between teacher and student. However, Erica's fiancé Dr Hugo Pine (Gig Young) and Gannon's nightclub singer girlfriend Peggy DeFore (Mamie Van Doren) are the obstacles standing in the way of true love.
