From start to finish, 'Nothing is Leaving' sounds like a 'Big-Hearted Robot'. From a sonic standpoint, many of the arrangements employ cold and frenetic electronic sounds, but at the center of each song is an organic heart driven by acoustic guitar or glockenspiel or melodica or, at times, simply raw and less-than-perfect vocal takes. Each song on the album began as a simple and emotional acoustic idea that was then built up into a larger, more dynamic auditory experience. Thematically, the songs portray an air of sometimes robotic detachment from romantic relationships, but it is clear that the singer never stops hoping, never stops FEELING, and most importantly, never stops striving to make a real human connection. The album was recorded in an apartment bedroom/makeshift recording studio, and this is apparent throughout. Upon listening closely, one can at times hear the jingling of a dog collar, the sounds of passing cars outside, or the washer and dryer running in the basement below. While the production is never perfect or pristine, there is an overwhelming sense of honesty that stems from recording every track in the same room as it was written, sometimes on the same day.
