Der Hollywood-Produzent David O. Selznick legte größten Wert auf die Musik zu seinen Filmen. Sein favorisierter Komponist war der aus Wien stammende Max Steiner. Dieser wurde auch für „Gone with the Wind“ engagiert, der 1939 der bis dahin längste und teuerste Film war und zu einem der Allzeit-Klassiker der Filmgeschichte wurde. Der Dirigent Charles Gerhardt hatte ein sehr enges Arbeitsverhältnis mit Steiner. Gemeinsam schufen sie aus der über dreistündigen Komposition eine sinfonische Dichtung, die 1973, zwei Jahre nach Steiners Tod, vom National Philharmonic Orchestra eingespielt wurde.
