Der 1856 in Neapel geborene Carlo Albanesi war ein Pianist und Komponist, dessen Musik, obwohl sie in den aristokratischen Kreisen Londons einst gefeiert wurde, weitgehend im Verborgenen geblieben ist. Als virtuoser Interpret und angesehener Professor an der Royal Academy of Music verband er die italienische melodische Eleganz mit der technischen Größe von Chopin, Brahms und Tschaikowsky. Die vorliegende Aufnahme präsentiert seine kühne und ausdrucksstarke Klaviersonate b-Moll voller schwungvoller Oktaven, komplizierter Kontrapunkte und Momente schmerzlicher Lyrik, und seine letzte Sonate C-Dur, in der edle Themen und dramatische Kontraste seine Meisterschaft in Form und Ausdruck offenbaren.
