This album is the second volume of the recording of the Cancionero de Upsala, a volume printed in the 1550s by the Scotto press in Venice, and including villancicos from the Spanish Renaissance, mainly originating from the Court of Valencia, ruled by Ferdinand of Aragon, the cultivated and music-loving Duke of Calabria. This recording includes some world premieres, and presents some rarities, such as five pieces derived from the plainchant tunes and the didactic bicinia (or organa) presented in the collection. Innovative and creative responses to the works are embodied by novel contrapuntal realizations and combinations of preexisting works.
