This record shows that duality. Prokofiev's sonata was written between 1938 and 1946 and seems directly related to the Russian history of his time. Let us recall some facts. In the 1920s, Prokofiev was political exile like many other artists. He was offered by the USSR all sorts of financial benefits that prompted him to return: he returned to Moscow in 1932. However, a few years later, between 1936 and 1937, the so-called "Great Terror" period began during which 700,000 Soviets lost their lives. Among them were friends of the composer such as Vladimir Mutnykh, the director of the Bolshoi who commissioned him Romeo and Juliet or Adrian Piotrovsky, co-librettist of the libretto. It was therefore a year after this tragic period that he composed his sonata, or at least that he sketched out some features.
