The Flophouse String Band has been performing since 2006, when four friends who have played together forn several years, decided to form the group and begin performing. They have a rarely heard instrumental configuration - Guitar, Appalachian Dulcimer, Fiddle, and Mandolin - that give the group a unique roots sound. The group consists of Becky Kelly, of Starkville MS, on Appalachian Dulcimer; her husband, Wayne Kelly, on Guitar and Mandolin; Susan Donoghue, of Easton, PA, on the fiddle; and Bill Fahy, of Rome, NY, on Mandolin, bass, and Guitar. The group performs a variety of upbeat traditional music in Old Time, Cajun, Celtic, and Blues styles, as well as original songs written by Susan and Bill. Becky has been playing the dulcimer for years, and currently performs in the group Jubilee as well, with Wayne. Jubilee has been performing in Mississippi and Alabama for 8 years. Wayne sings the blues much like some of the greats of the 20's and 30's. He also a DJ and hosts the long running Sunday nite Blues show, "The Juke", on WMSV radio in Starkville, MS. Susan studied violin at the University of Connecticut and from there began her interest in traditional music. She is an accomplished Cajun, Old Time, and Celtic fiddler. She is also a fine singer of cajun songs. She performs with several groups in and around Metro Philadelphia. Bill has been playing, teaching, and performing traditional music in Central NY for over 10 years with the The Sail Cats and his daughter Kelly in a vocal duet specializing in early country songs. He is an accomplished mandolin player and guitarist. The Flophouse String Band brings these diverse performers and styles together to create a delightful and fresh approach to all forms of Traditional American Music. Enjoy!
