The Tarikh-i-Mubarakshahi

Yahiya Bin Ahmad Bin 'Abdullah' Sirhindi
His translation retains the flavor of the original while providing context and annotation for students and historians. As both a source book and a narrative history, this volume is indispensable for understanding the transition from the Tughlaqs to the Sayyids and the broader history of medieval North India.
The Tārīkh-i-Mubārakshāhī is an important Persian chronicle of the Delhi Sultanate, composed in the early fifteenth century by Yāhiyā bin Ahmed bin ‘Abdullah’ Sirhindi. Covering the later years of the Tughlaq dynasty and the rise of the Sayyid rulers, it provides a rare contemporary account of political events, court intrigues, and military campaigns during a turbulent period of North Indian history. The work is particularly valuable because it comes from a writer connected with the ruling elite of his time, offering insight into the politics of succession, the struggles of provincial governors, and the challenges faced by the Sayyid dynasty in establishing authority after the decline of the Tughlaqs. Yāhiyā’s chronicle blends narrative with administrative detail, shedding light on how rulers sought to consolidate power in the face of factional rivalries and regional unrest. This English translation by H. Beveridge makes the chronicle accessible to modern readers.
