De publicatie biedt een commentaar op Sancties ofwel Straffen in de Kerk, Boek VI van het pauselijk Wetboek van Canoniek Recht van 1983 voor de r.k. Latijnse kerk. De parallelle regels van het Wetboek van Canones van de Oosterse Kerken van 1990 zijn er ook in opgenomen. Na een historische inleiding worden het ontstaan van het strafrecht van het Wetboek/1983, zijn problematiek en latere strafrechtelijke documenten van de kerk behandeld. Dan begint het commentaar, dat de titels van Boek VI volgt. In het eerste deel worden de regels over de bestraffing in het algemeen, de strafwet en verordening, de strafbaarheid van een katholiek, de verschillende straffen die de kerk hanteert, hun wijzen van toepassing en hun ophouden bestudeerd. In het tweede deel worden alle afzonderlijke misdrijven van het Wetboek uitgelegd, waaronder ketterij, seksueel misbruik en abortus. Het laatste hoofdstuk betreft administratieve, disciplinaire sancties, die geen straffen zijn. Het boek bevat een uitgebreide bibliografie. The publication presents a commentary on Sanctions or Penalties in the Church, Book VI of the pontifical Code of Canon Law from 1983 for the r.c. Latin church.The parallel rules of the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches of 1990 are considered as well. After an historical introduction the making of the penal law of the 1983 Code, its problems and later penal documents of the church are treated. Then starts the commentary, which follows the titles of Book VI. In the first part the rules are studied about punishment in general, penal law and precept, the liability of a catholic to churchpunishment, the various penalties the church handles, their ways of application and their cessation. In the second part all the particular offences off the Code, under which heresy, sexual abuse and abortion, are explained. The last chapter concerns administrative, disciplinary sanctions, which do not constitute penalties. An extensive bibliography is included.
