Die deutsche Sprache entwickelte in der DDR eine besondere Prägung. In der offiziellen Sprache wurden neue Worte entwickelt, um z.B. Lehnworte aus dem Amerikanischen nicht verwenden zu müssen (z.B. Wurfrotationsflachkegel für Frisbee-Scheibe). Es wurden Begriffe erfunden, um das Leben im real existierenden Sozialismus zu beschreiben wie z.B. Arbeiterkorrespondent oder Passowmethode. Ebenso erhielten eine Vielzahl von Wörtern wie Auflage, Angestellter, Oberlehrer und Jugendförderung in der DDR eine eigene Bedeutung.
