Sir Winston Churchill bestrode the 20th Century. He held many politicaland cabinet positions including Home Secretary from 1910 and thenChancellor of the Exchequer and Secretary of State for War. However itwas on 10th May 1940 when Churchill became Prime Minister and tookcontrol of Britain's war effort that he finally sealed his place in history.

This is the incredible story of the darkest days of World War II when Churchilland his Generals - Montgomery, Alexander, Wavell and Brooke were facingcatastrophe on every front. They suffered defeat at Dunkirk and survived theBattle of Britain. With enormous amounts of courage and skill they fought offthe Luftwaffe and managed to hold on until the Allied invasion of Europe. Heappointed key men to command the forces upon which the free world's survival depended. Men like Montgomery, Slim, Auchinleck, Alan Brooke andAlexander were given the highest command to wage war against Hitler.
