After the death of his wife and both parents a young man tries to escape from the demands of life in post war Britain as his mental well-being declines. Ralph Cobden's refusal at the age of eighteen to take over the family farm has disastrous effects and leaves him with a burden of guilt. By his early thirties he suffers a series of losses that destroy his mental well-being. Grief results in eccentric and potentially self-destructive behaviour. Professional help and the loving support of close friends are needed for him to survive. The result is an uplifting story of triumph over grief.
