On a dreich Saturday night on 29 August 1925, a small group of young climbers huddled under the Narnain Boulder below The Cobbler in the Arrochar Alps. Agreeing that a new club was needed, where hillcraft and mountaineering skills could be honed. The next day the inaugural meeting of the Junior Mountaineering club of Scotland took place.
On a dreich Saturday night on 29 August 1925, a small group of young climbers huddled under the Narnain Boulder below The Cobbler in the Arrochar Alps. Agreeing that a new club was needed, where hillcraft and mountaineering skills could be honed in the company of more experienced members outwith the professional class, they held the inaugural meeting of the Junior Mountaineering Club of Scotland the next day, convened from the comfort of a sleeping bag.
Since then, the JMCS has grown into a diverse club with Sections across Scotland and a presence south of the border, offering a welcoming reception for mountain enthusiasts from all walks of life.
One hundred years on, this engaging collection of stories, told by some of the characters who have been an integral part of the journey, charts the Club?s beginnings and celebrates significant moments and adventures in its history.
