Augustus Young first glimpsed Bras de Vénus at the very end of the 20th century and soon after became a permanent denizen of this charming French town. As a stranger, at first he was an object of curiosity –  people made way, shopkeepers smiled, butchers produced choice cuts and young ladies noticed him. But soon he was no longer considered a novelty and the town lost interest in him.
Isolated by his lack of the language, Augustus resolved to undergo what turned out to be the painful process of acquiring skills to communicate with the locals. He discovered that young ladies smiled because they had good teeth, butchers offered rejected cuts and friendly greetings were a cover for laughing behind his back. And yet he prevailed, and was rewarded along the way with an extraordinary cast of acquaintances, friends and enemies – here all shrewdly brought to literary life.
The Forked River Anthology captures, in prose and poem, Augustus Young’s journey to embrace and be embraced in a seaside town on the Mediterranean.
