A study of the warrior in Aztec society in a time of contrast between civilization and sacrifice, sanctity and savagery. It includes the story of the homicidal Cuachique, the Aztec "berserkers" whose sole role was to hunt the enemy down mercilessly.
In one popular image, the Aztec army was a fierce juggernaut, establisihng an empire by overwhelming its neighbours and sacrificing thousands to bloodthirsty gods. In contrasting perspective, Indian warriors were quickly and easily defeated by Cortes greatly outnumbered Spaniards. This book presents a story that lies between the two extremes. Through the eyes of an individual soldier, it shows that Aztec warfare was much richer and far more complex than previously understood. It also studies the lives of warrirors in the homicidal Cuachique - ruthless Aztec warriors who spent their whole lives hunting down and slaughtering their enemies.
