It is also an autobiography, in which the author (b. 1949) describes the various phases of his life – a Yorkshire childhood during the austerity of post-war Britain in the 1950s, moving on to the ‘liberated’ 1960s, and then the worlds of university, work, and finally retirement.

There is nostalgia for a vanished world, along with plenty of interesting characters and anecdotes, which will appeal to all readers.
