Miracle Man

Billy Mackay was hailed as the new George Best when he joined Rangers in 1976. His Ibrox career briefly soared before a horrific knee injury forced him to retire at age 23. Nicknamed ‘the miracle man’, he returned in 1986 to pursue a fairy-tale ending with double-chasing Hearts. This is his incredible story.

Billy Mackay lived both the dream and the nightmare after signing for Rangers in 1976. Blessed with blistering pace and a natural eye for goal, he was the most sought-after young winger in Britain. Mackay chose Rangers, where Jock Wallace hailed him as ‘the new George Best’. He made his debut at just 16 and spent eight years at Ibrox during one of the club’s most turbulent eras. His career briefly shone but was littered with sliding-doors moments. There were big European nights and a League Cup medal. Mackay also played in the ‘shame game’ against Chesterfield in the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1980. Then disaster struck. A catastrophic knee injury forced him into retirement at age 23, leaving him barely able to function. Yet, after a year of rest, Mackay made a stunning comeback, joining double-chasing Hearts in February 1986. The papers dubbed him ‘the miracle man’ as he found himself at the heart of one of the most dramatic climaxes to a Scottish football season in living memory. This is his incredible story.
