A Garden Grew describes the creation of a garden over a 30-year period. Originally written by Kathleen Pickard-Smith, the unpublished manuscript from the 1960s has been unearthed and edited by Richard Baker.

A Garden Grew was written in the 1960s, but never published. It chronicles the creation of a garden over a 30-year period in the grounds of a Grade II listed Tudor house called Harveys, in the delightful village of Glynde in East Sussex.

The author – Kathleen Pickard-Smith - was a keen amateur botanist and an accomplished gardener. She filled her garden with unusual plants that few others were keeping at that time, and it was, for a period, open to the public.

Richard Baker has unearthed the lost manuscript, and added colour photos of many of the plants featured. He has also undertaken considerable research, and provided a detailed biography of the author, who led an interesting life, and who was, for many years, owner of the Brighton School of Music.
