Eleven-year-old Rohan Hood has spent his life in The Cemetery – a bleak world where joy is forbidden and liking other boys is a dangerous secret. Everything changes when he rescues a wounded bat named Buddha and a mysterious black band appears around his wrist, leaving Rohan to wonder whether his people might still have a chance to make things right.

When the ruthless leader, Dolbeanz, discovers Rohan’s secret, he is forced to flee. His escape leads him to Mirum Adventrum, a school shimmering with life and wonder, where children learn to live in harmony with animals, spirits and the elements.

For the first time, Rohan feels like he belongs. But dark forces are stirring, and the gods of the Underworld have their eyes on him.
