Great Themes of Art

Great Themes of Art is an inspiring and accessible history of art from the early Renaissance to the present day, through a series of familiar and universal themes.

Discover how artists across centuries have grappled with the same hopes, fears, beliefs and experiences in Great Themes of Art.

From the sacred devotion of the Middle Ages to the drama of the Baroque and the bold experimentation of modern art, this guide reveals how art can be viewed through the themes that connect us all.

Rather than following a traditional chronological approach, art historian and painter Lydia Bauman explores the great subjects that have inspired artists throughout history, uncovering surprising connections between works created centuries apart.

Themes include:

• Animals
• Death
• Domesticity
• Dreams and visions
• Food
• Nature
• Faith
•  . and more.

Tracing the familiar and universal themes that have shaped art history, Great Themes of Art invites you to slow down and look closely. With a rich array of images and insightful guidance, it will help you to notice key details, understand context and build confidence.

If you have ever felt intimidated walking into an art gallery, unsure where to start or what to look for, this book will transform that uncertainty into curiosity and enjoyment.
