A symphony of grey, orange and green, this unforgettable autumn landscape painting appears poised to transcend its figurative function altogether. The flattening of perspective in so many of Klimt’s woodland scenes is often said to result from his use of a ‘viewfinder’ (if no more than a cut-out cardboard frame) in composing scenes.
