Upon A Turning Stage

Life Lesson of a Mentee, Mentor, and Ally

What makes a great mentor—and an exceptional mentee?

Upon the Turning Stage, Charisse Lillie traces a remarkable journey from segregated Houston classrooms to trailblazing leadership in law, government, and corporate America. As the first African American woman to serve in numerous senior roles—from Philadelphia City Solicitor to executive at Comcast to chair of the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia—Lillie shares a deeply personal account of how mentorship and allyship shaped her success.

More than a memoir, this insightful resource is a masterclass in purposeful connection. With candor and clarity, Lillie reveals how she learned to be a valuable mentee—and how that made her a better mentor, advocate, and leader. She draws on her upbringing by artist-educators, her immersion in the performing arts, and her experience in elite legal and corporate circles to show how trust, preparation, and presence fuel meaningful professional growth.

Perfect for emerging professionals seeking guidance, and for seasoned leaders ready to invest in the next generation, Upon the Turning Stage offers actionable insight and inspiring stories that illuminate the power of mutual support.

Whether someone is just starting out or reflecting on their legacy, Upon the Turning Stage will challenge them to lead, mentor, and show up with purpose.
