The Flock

'A vivid and specific portrait of ambition, grief, and the families we assemble for ourselves. A book full of intelligence, heart and forward motion.' LENA DUNHAM, author of the Sunday Times bestseller FAMESICK

New York City, 1997. Six strangers – Maria, Nadine, Jesse, Emmie, Blake and Anthony – meet as classmates at the prestigious American School of Ballet. They are the chosen ones: young, hungry, and united by shared greatness. They throw themselves into friendship with the same adolescent passion that they bring to their art, and their tight-knit group soon becomes known as the Flock.

Twenty-five years later, the group has scattered. While Emmie and Anthony enjoy the trappings of hard-won fame and success, Nadine recovers from professional failure, Maria faces domestic disappointment, and Jesse’s life is in freefall in the aftermath of an unthinkable accusation. But when tragedy forces them to reunite, the Flock must finally revisit the years that brought them together – and face head-on how they fell apart.

The Flock is a profound, richly woven story of coming-of-age and then coming-of-middle-age in a changed moral landscape. At once tender and incisive, it confronts the elusiveness of memory, the weight of expectation, and the beauty and brutality of lifelong friendship.
