Dr. Bruno Bernard, also known as Bernard of Hollywood, was the most sought‑after glamour photographer of the 20th century. His portraits of stars like Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Gregory Peck, Ginger Rogers, John Wayne, Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Elvis Presley, and Lucille Ball helped define the look and mythology of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Celebrated by audiences, collectors, and curators, Bernard’s work reached its pinnacle when the Modern Museum of Art named his image of Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn in White, the most iconic photograph of the century. His vast portfolio remains a cornerstone of classic Hollywood portraiture. 

From his early pinups to his photographs taken in Hollywood, Las Vegas, Mallorca, and beyond, Bernard documented the evolving spirit of mid‑century America—its style, its leisure, and its fascination with fame. His images didn’t just capture stars; they shaped how generations came to envision beauty and celebrity.

The Palm Springs Racquet Club honors Bernard’s work and his time at the legendary California retreat, with stars like Tony Curtis, Bogart and Bacall, Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rock Hudson, offering a glimpse into Hollywood life off‑set. 

With an afterword by Kirk Douglas, personal stories from the living relatives of visiting stars, memorabilia, and hundreds of never‑before‑seen photographs, this book is a journey through one of film history’s most famous eras. Curated by Bernard’s grandson, Joshua John Miller, and his partner, Mark A. Fortin, the collection pairs striking images with reflective essays that uncover new treasures from an extraordinary archive. The book also includes interviews with notable contemporary figures that have connections to Palm Springs, including songwriter Justin Tranter, director Gus Van Saint, artist Youssef Nabil, journalist Nancy Jo Sales, and novelist Bret Easton Ellis.
