Yellow is Not for Girls Like Me

The debut novel from Commonwealth Short Story Prize and Deborah Rogers Award-shortlisted author. A bold and brilliant multi-generational family story starting in wartime Trinidad

I learn from young that God don't live in poor man house.

1939, Trinidad. Sixteen-year-old Elsie is sent away from her volatile home in Fyzabad to live with her socially ambitious Aunt Fan and cousin, Shari.

Elsie, told her dark skin makes her unfit for bright colours, longs to shine like her cousin. Then, when Shari flees for England during the Second World War, Elsie slips into her place, running the household and eventually marrying a white officer. But an act of brutal betrayal soon shatters Elsie's dreams for the future.

Decades later, in the 1970s, Elsie's daughter Scarlett is reunited with her family at a funeral and forced to reckon with the legacy of silence that has haunted them for generations.

A bold and brilliant multigenerational family story opening in wartime Trinidad, Yellow Is Not for Girls Like Me weaves together the lives of one family navigating love, loss and betrayal, revealing how the past can shape generations to come.
