Formed a Band

British Indie in the 2000s, From Albion to Interzone
A history of the scenes and sounds of the 2000s British indie music explosion, as told by the key artists who made it happen

Britpop may have burned out by the end of the nineties, but British indie music was already on the brink of its next great era. From Camden to Glasgow, Sunderland to Sheffield, scenes were emerging all across the country in the early 2000s - whether in clubs, house parties or on message boards - and a movement was happening. By the middle of the decade that groundswell was unstoppable, and guitar bands once again dominated both the charts and the cultural conversation.

In Formed a Band, Selium Bulut tells the definitive story of this explosion, capturing all the energy and ambition of a remarkable time, whilst delving into the political and cultural context of the era, and asking why this brief golden period fractured and fizzled just a few years later.

Vividly brought to life through over fifty original interviews with key characters from the period - including members of Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, The Cribs, The Maccabees, The Long Blondes and many more - it recreates and reappraises that exhilarating time when it felt like anyone could pick up a guitar, form a band and change everything.
