DESCRIPTION
In His Own Words John Lennon was born in Liverpool in 1940, growing up in the post-war city that would later shape much of his wit, edge and restlessness. He formed a skiffle group called The Quarrymen as a teenager, which Paul McCarntey joined after the two met in 1957. McCartney then introduced George Harrison to the band shortly after, and the core of what would become The Beatles began to take shape. By 1962, with the addition of Ringo Starr, the lineup was complete. Lennon quickly established himself as one of the band's primary creative forces alongside McCartney. Early Beatles success in the UK, driven by songs like "Please Please Me" and "She Loves You" showcased his ability to blend rock 'n' roll energy with smart lyrics and emotional depth. As Beatlemania spread globally, Lennon became known for his dry humour, candid interviews and increasingly artistry. Lennon began to push the group to be more experimental: both in the studio and in their song lyrics. Moving away from conventional pop, their music started to take on a more introspective, darker tone, in line with Lennon's evolving worldview and personal anxieties. While his collaboration with McCartney remained a powerful creative force, it started to grow more competitive, and as his relationship with Yoko Ono developed he diverged increasingly from the original Beatles model. By the time The Beatles disbanded in 1970, Lennon had helped transform popular music. The legacy of his solo albums, Plastic Ono band and peace activism are still felt today, as is the impact of Lennon's tragic death in 1980. SAMPLE QUOTE "I've always considered my work one piece and I consider that my work won't be finished until I am dead and buried - and I hope that's a long, longtime." - John, on his artistic legacy, interview with RKO Radio, 8 December 1980.* SAMPLE FACT When a teenage John Lennon pestered his Aunt Mimi for a guitar, she relented - but made her feelings about his prospects perfectly clear: "The guitar's all right as a hobby, John, but it'll never earn you any money". The phrase has became one of the most gloriously wrong predictions in music history! Years later, after the Beatles had conquered the world, John had the quote engraved on a silver plaque and sent it to her - at the house he bought for her. Mimi hung it on her wall.
Discover the genius who started it all, from founding the band that would to take over the world to promoting peace and love.
*He was murdered a few hours after this interview.
