The only thing that Detective Dexter Hound loves as much as his two Shih Tzus is solving murders. Or it was. When his investigation into a suspicious death is shut down by his superiors, he quits the force in protest. Invited by an old friend whose beloved Labradors he once rescued, Dexter arrives in the Scottish Highlands as guest of honour at her exclusive hotel.

Dexter discovers not the relaxing break he'd hoped for but a world of simmering tension, bitter rivalries and guests with everything to hide. At least there's Annie, the chambermaid who glides effortlessly between staff and guests, and straight into Dexter's confidence.

Then, the hotel is rocked by a discovery of a body. Checked in under a false name, she was hiding from something. or someone. Only Dexter sees through her disguise: she was the prime suspect in a case he never managed to solve. When a violent storm cuts the hotel off from the mainland, Dexter is forced to become a detective once more. As the bodies begin to pile up, Dexter teams up with sharp-witted Annie to uncover the truth before the killer strikes again.
