The essays in this collection have been contributed by students and colleagues of Gerhart Niemeyer to express their esteem for him and for his many years of scholarly and pedagogical accomplishment. To them, Gerhart epitomizes a good man: a man of reason, spirit, and profound faith, a teacher par excellence, a man who has throughout his life labored at the essential human task of achieving practical wisdom and sharing it with others. The essays discuss many of Niemeyer's concerns, from the disorders of modern ideologies and other dislocations of modernity to the relation between faith and order, to public policy, literature, education and the nature of teaching, and the thought of Eric Voegelin.
