Josef Koudelka (b. 1938) is a Czech-French photographer whose powerful black-and-white images have made him one of the most influential documentary photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries. He first gained international recognition for his photographs of the 1968 Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, which captured the human impact of political upheaval with remarkable courage and immediacy. After leaving his homeland, Koudelka spent decades documenting the lives of marginalized communities, landscapes and traces of human history across Europe and the Middle East. His striking compositions, emotional depth and unwavering commitment to visual storytelling have profoundly shaped the language of modern photography.
