The French Army decided in August 1933 the development of a new light tank to replace the Renault FT. Under the scheme Hotchkiss planned H35. Debuted in 1939, the new machine was souped up to go 37.5 km/h and was equipped with a 33 caliber gun. H39 was superior to the then German main tanks Panzer I and II in total performance and was equal to even Panzer III in fore power.
