In Messiaen's work, rhythm, colours and birdsong are central themes that even permeate each other because birds not only look very "colourful", but also sing in many timbres and in particularly differentiated rhythms. The monumental, almost 3-hour long work Catalogue d'oiseaux focuses especially strongly and in an encyclopedic maner on the music of the birds - there are 77 in all.
