In einem kleinen Dorf in den österreichischen Alpen steht ein ehemaliger Gasthof.
Vor vielen Jahren, als es noch Sommerfrische gab, ein stattlicher Betrieb. Zwei Schwestern sind hier groß geworden.
Sonja lebt nun in Berlin, sie ist Schauspielerin geworden, sehr erfolgreich, ein Fernsehstar.
Verena, etwas älter, hat das Dorf nicht verlassen. Nach dem Unfalltod der Mutter lebt sie mit Mann und Kind in ihrem Elternhaus, das nun viel zu groß ist für die wenigen Bewohner.
Doch sie ist nicht so genügsam, wie es scheint. Und auch der Vater der beiden Schwestern lebt in dem großen Haus, ein alt und mürrisch gewordener Patriarch.
Seine Frau gestorben, das Gasthaus seitdem stillgelegt. Es ist Herbst, ein schöner Oktober, die Blätter am Baum hinter dem Haus sind schon bunt verfärbt.
Da bringt ihn ein schwerer Herzinfarkt in Todesnähe.
