Rabba Mereya

Rabba Mereya is a Punjabi term that translates into ・・My Lord・・. Often mentioned in the devotional songs of Punjab, this term is not restricted to any one religion. A calling out to God, the several religious traditions of Punjab such as Islam, Sikhism, Hinduism etc, have been historically known to use this term. It belongs to the land and the shared, interwoven reality of existence of these communities. These religious traditions have evolved varying styles of devotional music and yet each has a secular flavor akin to the notions of the term ・・Rabba Mereya・・. This album presents a number of songs from these devotional traditions by a variety of artists such as Shaukat Ali, Narata Ram, Gurmej Raja, Dalbar singh, Gurmeet and Sardar Surjeet Singh. The instruments used by these artists vary from the Harmonium, Tabla and Chimta, to the Jogiya Sarangi and the Algoza and bring alive the spiritual dimensions of the folk realms of Punjab
