King Of Me

Personal experiences shape every musicians compositions. This could not be any more true for singer, songwriter, and mbira (thumb-piano) player Chris Berry. At fifteen years of age, Berry began studying drums with a master drummer residing in California. These studies led Berry to Africa in pursuit of more African drumming lessons. Attracted by the Shona people of Zimbabwe, Berry remained with them, learned their language, and studied the mbira. During this time, Berrys teachers encouraged him to begin composing his own music. Drawing from his own musical experiences, he created a unique blend of hip-hop, afro-pop, and Shona music. On his latest album, King of Me, Berry strips away the horn sections and collaborates with Ivorian drummer Abou Diarrassouba, leaving the audience with his voice, the newly electrified mbira, and drums. While in the past Berry has enabled the Shona people to record their music, in King of Me, Berry has combined drum patterns, mbira sequences, and lyrics from Shona ceremonies. As a result of this combination, he has created a sound unique to him, a sound that only a man with Chris Berrys experiences could create.
