"Big Joe" Turner, also known as "The Boss Of The Blues" (the NME described him as "the grandfather of rock and roll.") was an American blues shouter from Kansas City, Missouri. An Atlantic Records songwriter/producer named Jesse Stone (under the name of Charles Calhoun) wrote "Shake, Rattle And Roll" (a favorite saying in Stone's weekly poker game) specially for Turner's New York recording session. According to songwriter Doc Pomus, "Rock and roll would have never happened without "Big Joe".
