Inval leraar Henry Barthes probeert de studenten die hij lesgeeft iets bij te brengen in de korte tijd die hij met ze heeft. Zo ook op de probleemschool in een buitenwijk van New York, waar hij een tijdelijke positie aangeboden heeft gekregen. Hoewel hij zijn collega’s en scholieren steeds op afstand heeft weten te houden, wordt zijn geïsoleerde leven dit keer volledig overhoop gehaald.
