ENGLISH THE BAND HOTEL HOTEL is the missing link between a Balkan Wedding, a Latin fiesta and a classic western movie. It's members are an eclectic lobby of global influences, from Southern America to Southeastern Europe and from The Netherlands to Kurdistan, mixing up an irresistible cocktail of Ska, Soul, Slavic Folk, Country, Pop, Jazz, and Bossa. The band Hotel is a 9-star destination. Cleverly mixing mariachi, ska, son, and a driving Balkan beat, HOTEL manages to seduce every spectator into dancing the night away. This is an infectious blend of diverse cultures and stories from it's Croatian, Dutch, Mexican, Kurdish, Argentinean, French, Bulgarian, Czech and Chilean members. HOTEL has therefore built up a fast growing live reputation. HOTEL was born in Amsterdam during 2004 when Claudio Encina, Stefijn Lehr, Arjan Amin en Hans Koning jammed a distinct repertoire together as the basis for their debut album "The World of HOTEL". Joining their cosmopolitan mix of styles were 'HOTEL-regulars' including Croatian guitar virtuoso Branko Galoic, Jose-Luis 'el Coyote' Fuentes on vihuela, top drummer Luis Diaz and brass section heavyweights Chris Corstens, Raya Hadzieva, and Marian Masik. HOTEL has performed at several major festivals such as Lowlands, Totaalfestival, Robodock, Fusion Festival (D), Polé Polé (B), and Noorderslag 2009. They have toured and captured audiences in Greece, France, Germany, Belgium, Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia and Croatia. In addition, their poetic theater performances 'the Donkey Show', 'The Varia-T-tent', 'A Heart Attack With HOTEL' and 'Straight From The Heart' have also gained widespread attention. On 9-11-2008 they presented their album 'the world of HOTEL' at a raving release party in Amsterdam's PARADISO. Ivar Vermeulen of Rebel Music Group, the album's label, produced the CD. The unrestrained performance with which HOTEL presented their debut CD last Thursday at Paradiso promises nothing short of an enrichment of the club and festival circuits. With verve they defended the spirit of Calexico, Mano Negra and the Amsterdam Klezmer Band. On the studio album their vitality remains perfectly intact. Guitarists, horns, percussion and accordion surround singer Arjan Amin, a ballsy character who easily levels with the likes of Mink Deville. All ingredients of a good mestizo are present: musicians from ten different cultures alternate English and Spanish in a musical mash of Son, Reggae, Pop, Ska and Mexicana. There are political intermezzos á la Nitin Sawhney, themes that touch upon the godlessness of bordertown Tijuana (Manu Chao style) and the sexy kitsch of Yerba Buena. But HOTEL distinguishes itself by letting Amerizana, Soul, and Country & Western take the upper hand - sometimes neat like Calexico, sometimes rough like Tom Waits. The lyrical polyglot curvatures are sometimes kitschy ("she looked at me deep into the ojos") and a more serious track about the American bombardment of Baghdad sings a more sinister "We're gonna rock this city". Een Balkan-bruiloft in een Mexicaanse cantina in de Amsterdamse Jordaan, waar een knappe mix van mariachi, ska, son, levenslied en een stampende Balkan-beat elke bezoeker tot dansen verleidt. De negen sterren vertegenwoordigen de nationaliteiten Kroatisch, Nederlands, Mexicaans, Koerdisch, Argentijns, Frans, Bulgaars, Tsjechisch en Chileens van de bandleden. Dit staat garant voor een aanstekelijke samensmelting van uiteenlopende culturen en verhalen die ontaardt in een opzwepende, stevige groove waardoor 'het dak er steevast af gaat'. HOTEL is dan ook een band met een snel groeiende live-reputatie. HOTEL werd in 2004 geboren op een kleine, krakkemikkige woonboot onder de 5de baan van Schiphol. Met totaal verschillende achtergronden jamden Claudio Encina, Stefijn Lehr, Arjan Amin en Hans Koning er een repertoire bij elkaar dat de basis legde voor hun debuutalbum "the world of HOTEL". Tegenwoordig verblijven HOTEL en hun gasten op het vuurtoreneiland van Amsterdam. De band heeft een structuur die uitstekend past bij hun kosmopolitische mix van stijlen. Dit ontstond vooral op het stadsstrand Blijburg in Amsterdam. Daar verzorgde HOTEL maandelijks een broeierige happening met telkens nieuwe HOTEL-gasten en één muziekstijl als thema. Balkan, Braziliaans, Mexicaans, Surinaams en Urbanjam zijn slechts enkele in een lange reeks. Sommige gasten zijn nu 'HOTEL-regulars' geworden. Branko Galoic uit Kroatie, die in 2002 naar Nederland vluchtte, is sinds zijn tienerjaren een gedreven autodidactisch gitarist. Tegenwoordig behoren zijn vingers tot de snelste van Nederland. Een andere regular is Jose-Luis 'el Coyote' Fuentes op vihuela. Hij werkte al samen met Stefijn Lehr in de band 'Mariachi Tierra Caliente' en tijdens de Mexicojam op Blijburg betrad ook hij de wereld van HOTEL Beide muzikanten vervangen in 2005 gitarist Hans Koning, die dan de band verlaat. Topdrummer Luis Diaz speelt sinds 2008 met HOTEL en wordt ingelijfd als vaste drummer. Voor de blaaspartijen ontstaat een hecht collectief van zwaargewichten. Chris Corstens op sax en dwarsfluit uit 'down south' Brabant leidt jarenlang jazz sessies. HOTEL viel meteen voor zijn vrije vloeiende stijl. Raya Hadzieva op trompet komt uit Bulgarije en Marian Masik op trombone uit Tsjechie versterken sinds enige tijd de blazers sectie. Verder werkten ze met de trompettisten Canek Cabrera Morales van de Mexicaanse band 'Los de abajo' en Bart Maris, bekend van dEUS, Zita Swoon en 'Het Beukorkest '. HOTEL speelde inmiddels op diverse grote festivals zoals Lowlands, Totaalfestival, Robodock, Havenfestival, Fusion Festival (D), Polé Polé (B), Noorderslag 2009. Ze tourden door Griekenland, Frankrijk, Duitsland, België, Bosnië, Montenegro, Servië and Kroatië. Daarnaast maakten ze ook diverse poëtische theatershows: 'the Donkey Show', 'de Varie-T-tent', 'A Heart Attack With HOTEL' en 'Straight From The Heart'. Ook toerde HOTEL 3 maanden lang kriskras door het voormalig Joegoslavie, waar ze overal samenspeelden met locale artiesten, o.a. Rambo Amadeus, wereldberoemd in de Balkan, en de drijvende zigeuners van de Donau, The black Panthers. Op 9/11 2008 presenteerde zij hun CD 'the world of HOTEL' op de CD-USB releaseparty in PARADISO in Amsterdam. De CD werd geproduceerd door Ivar Vermeulen van Rebel Music Group, tevens muzikale bloedbroeder en geestverwant. Met dank aan Stan van Rijven, uit wiens recensie in Trouw (zaterdag 13 september 2008) hier en daar vrijelijk is geciteerd. Recenties Amsterdam heeft er een negensterrenhotel bij, maar dan in de gedaante van een orkest dat mondiale rock&roll met een rafelrandje uitserveert. Het onstuimige optreden waarmee HOTEL donderdag zijn debuut-CD in Paradiso lanceerde, beloofd een absolute verrijking van clubcircuit en festivals.
