Fay Grim is bang dat Ned, haar tienerzoon, net zo zal worden als zijn vader Henry Fool, die al zeven jaar op de vlucht is. Haar broer Simon zit in de gevangenis omdat hij Henry heeft geholpen het land te ontvluchten. Dan wordt Fay benaderd door een CIA agent om de vermiste notebook van Henry te vinden in ruil voor de vrijlating van Simon. De missie escaleert en uitmondt in gevaarlijke zwendelpraktijken waardoor Fay zich ineens in de levensgevaarlijke wereld van de spionage begeeft.
