Are the boundaries between 'high' and 'low' art gradually disappearing? Lunapark doesn't think so. Yet there are areas in new music that offer plenty of opportunities to explore a large variety of styles - now that's what we think is interesting. Lunapark presents a wide gamut of music on stage. The name of the group stands for the mechanical aspect in the works it performs. But it also stands for excitement, adventure, fun, unexpected curves and loops, and a panoramic look at the blue sky. Arnold Marinissen and Anthony Fiumara founded Lunapark in 2009. It is the first ensemble committed to what we call 'digital folk music' - a term borrowed from composer Dugal McKinnon, which catches all the characteristics of our music in three words. Not surprisingly, Lunapark's debut CD is named after a song by Aphex Twin, Flim. During our first season (and subsequently as well) we regularly performed arrangements of his electronic music - to great acclaim. Why Aphex Twin? Because he is totally in tune with the concept of digital folk music - and therefore with Lunapark. Just as serious American composers often take their cues from jazz, rock, and world music to get their music ticking like clockwork, the Englishman Richard D. James (Aphex' real name) with his ingenious drum patterns has been making eyes at contemporary composed music for years. On top of Fiumara's arrangements DJ StriCt (Jeroen Bakkenes) weaves subtle beats that fit Lunapark like a glove. Inspired by Brian Eno's idiosyncratic approach we included our own arrangement of the Three Variations on the Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel in our repertory - on this CD represented by the third part, Brutal Ardour. Come to think of it, this is also a prime example of electronic music that deserves a concert audience, even though Eno treated recorded strings using tape recorders, delays, and reverb when he recorded the music in 1975. Lunapark shows it's wild side in the electric screeching of Industry by Michael Gordon and the hot forge of cheating, lying, stealing by David Lang. Apart from being active as arrangers we also feel the urge to compose for our ensemble - as evident from Guts II (Marinissen) and Solo for Alto Flute (Fiumara). Our most unexpected 'discovery' to date is the music of British composer Michael Chant. His grimacing Slight of Finger Throwaway, written in 1971, has proven the ideal opening for Lunapark's first CD.
