Het is juni 1959 als acteur George Reeves (Ben Affleck) dood wordt aangetroffen in zijn huis. Reeves speelde de rol van onverslaanbare Superman in een populaire televisieserie. De politie sluit de zaak als zelfmoord, maar geruchten over de misdaad gonzen door de stad. Detective Louis Simo (Adrien Brody) wordt ingeschakeld om de waarheid te achterhalen. Het onderzoek wordt persoonlijk als Simo onverwachte verbindingen en parallellen tussen zijn eigen leven en dat van Reeves tegenkomt…
