The Wipers Times (BBC)

It's 1916 and the First World War is in full swing. Captain Fred Roberts, a former diamond prospector, leads a small unit of British soldiers through the ruins of Ypres, Belgium. There, a surprising discovery awaits him: a printing press is found in a bombed-out building. Roberts sees it as the perfect opportunity to create a satirical newspaper with his men. It seems a strange idea, so close to the front lines. But Roberts believes it will do the men good to occasionally think about something other than warfare. No sooner said than done, and the newspaper proves a huge success, however perilous its production and distribution may be. Making matters even more difficult is the humorless Lieutenant General Howfield, who can't stand The Wipers Times's frequent mockery of the "bigwigs." He even wants to ban its publication altogether. Will Roberts's unique newspaper survive the war despite this?
