The pianist, organist and composer César Franck (1822-1890) was born in Liège, although he spent most of his life in Paris. Whilst his father had initially planned that his immensely talented son should enjoy a career as a pianist, the young Franck was to become renowned primarily as organist and composer. The young César won his premier prix in piano in Liege at the age of twelve, after which his father promptly organised a concert tour to Liege, Brussels and Aachen. The family moved to Paris in 1835, where Franck began studying at its renowned conservatory in 1837. He was awarded a premier prix for piano scarcely a year later, although his organ lessons under François Benoist were less successful: Franck was awarded only a second prix in 184), after which his father decided that enough was enough and that the young Franck, now in his early twenties, should focus on a career as a concert pianist.
