Egli e' un giovane professore di filosofia, la cui esistenza e' stata segnata da un episodio drammatico: crede infatti di aver ucciso, da ragazzo, Lino Seminara, un autista che ha tentato di avere con lui dei rapporti omosessuali. In seguito, vivra' nella costante ricerca di qualcosa che lo riscatti dal rimorso che l'opprime. Quando il fascismo prende il potere, Clerici, inseguendo il proprio desiderio di normalita', si butta fra le braccia del regime: una scelta che gli consente di inserirsi in una societa' che ha nell'ordine e nella disciplina i propri emblemi ed in cui il male e la violenza sono ormai divenuti diffusi modelli di comportamento.
